Researching the three main tent poles to a story that’s been in my
head for about a decade. Historical adventure/mystery, the science
behind the story, and an exotic location.
My brain hurts and I need sleep but don’t want to lose momentum. Bring snacks and sodas.
Time to evaluate my progress for my Groundhog Resolutions, the 10th annual attempt at creating life-long habits for myself. I’ve discovered that right after the end of the year holidays I am not mentally or physically capable of sticking with resolutions for the upcoming new year. I need a break so I take the whole month of January off to reflect and plan and start on 2/2 instead of 1/1.
I’ll check back in on myself on 4/4
Fun-
Get another tattoo: Coming soonÂ
More camping: Waiting on warmer weather
More skinny dipping:Â
Waiting on warmer weather
Learn Spanish more fluently: Downloaded the Duolingo app for practice
Join a book club: No decent bookclubs around town. Start one?Â
50 Books a year challenge: I need to average 5 books a month to complete this goal. I’ve read two and started a 3rd. Not bad for the month of February going into March.Â
Snail mail friend: Need to seek, find, write
Volunteer: Looking into organizations that I can contribute to
Fitness-
Kickboxing: Dusted off an old DVD called Tae Bo and set up a space to work out in. Let’s see how this will work.Â
Self-defense: Eh. Not to thrilled with this one. May drop.Â
Yoga: Almost daily practice using the Sworkit app and DVDs. Is it supposed to hurt when I stretch?Â
More 5 & 10k obstacle course racing: I may have missed the boat for OCR this year. Looking into local 5ks and cause to support.Â
Consistent training: Working out with Tracy is mutually beneficial. Accountability may be the one thing I needed to maintain this. We’ve just started out this past week and so far so good for both of us. Will utilize digital encouragement as well with our Fitbits.
Consistent nutritional training: Work in progress. Bad food is too cheap and easy to acquire while healthier options are scare and pricey. Looking at some non-meat options as well as eating at home more. Again, accountability is key here.
Hashing:Â
Waiting on warmer weather. Got called out by THHH Mismanagement for it too. Will be paying for it when I’m back on trail.Â
Hiking: Taken more than a few hikes this year and explored familiar and new trails. Ancient Forest was extensive but limited access. Will go back. Also, urban hikes along River parks, Midland valley and Turkey mountain.Â
Geocaching: I am 0 for 12 so far this year. Um, what? Meanwhile, Tracy has decided to sign up and has found two that I wanted.Â
Meditation: Will be utilizing the same space as kickboxing and yoga for this.Â
Creative-
Complete my book: Researching settings, plot, characters and more. Novel or short stories? Hmm…
Photo essay on a topic I am passionate about: Waiting on warmer weather and a topic.Â
Video log every month: Landed on Youtube instead of Vimeo. So far just dark, grainy video of me looking tired but giddy for some reason. Â
Leave inspirational notes everywhere: Send me inspiration.
Year in photos album: 2017 is just there, waiting on me. Cannot wait to see what 2018 memories I’ll have at the EOY.

Year in photos album: 2017 is just there, waiting on me. Cannot wait to see what 2018 memories I’ll have at the EOY.
Its that time of year again. The 10th attempt at creating life-long
habits for myself. I’ve discovered that right after the end of the year
holidays I am not mentally or physically capable of sticking with
resolutions for the upcoming new year. I need a break so I take the
whole month of January off to reflect and plan.
So the kickoff is
today on 2/2! My resolutions, goals and life-changing habits are listed
below. These are not to be confused with items on my “F*%k It List”. I
will check in very month and then review my progress. Next check-in is
on March 3 (3/3). After that will be 4/4, 5/5 and so on. Here we go:
This is my second check-in of GHR 2013. By now, most people have abandoned their NYE resolutions and that is where GHR comes in for me. So, on with my resolutions.
Relocate back to Houston Texas
Drop and lose 5 pounds a month for 4 months
Learn Ruby on Rails
Finally complete my file server and host this website and photo archives on it.
Here is my progress from 3/3 when I started this until today, 4/4.
Relocation to Houston efforts are an ongoing work in progress. Â
Lost a total of 3 pounds this month.Â
Have not even looked at Ruby On Rails.
Regarding the development of a file server, the motherboard has failed. I am not going to spend any more time or money in to it.Â
I need to lose a minimum of 8 pounds this month to achieve my goal of 20 pounds off in 4 months.
Keep up the relocation effort. After a couple of phone interviews and no results, this is discouraging and difficult to do in another state.
Tax season has taken a large mental toll on me and I have to shake this off.
So it begins. A new personal project that is not your average new year resolution. It is the Ground Hog Day resolutions. While similar to NYE, it is delayed for a month and starts on February 2 (today). I will also be posting monthly check-ins to monitor my progress. The goals are specific and personal to myself. Feel free to recreate and customize to your needs. These are huge steps for me and I think that if they are broken down into specifics, I’ll stand a greater chance of finishing strong.
All right, here are my goals in no order of importance:
Sleep- I am going to have difficulty with this one, probably more so then the rest. There is so much that I want to do in a day but find it difficult to accomplish. After a good workout and a long day of work, I’m sure this well send me crawling into bed. Just to be safe, I am removing late night snacking and caffeine before 8PM. Also, I downloaded an app simply called “White Noise” that creates ambient sound loops that seems to soothe my brain. Goal: 8 hours sleep daily
Pray- I’m a firm believer in the power of prayer. The chance to be still and communicate with God is not to be missed. The problem lately is that it has been missed. As the spiritual leader of my family, I have neglected this but now resolve to be stronger. Recently we introduced nightly prayers with our daughter who gets upset if we forget to perform them. With prayer comes meditation and devotion. The WonderWife and I will be devoting ourselves to family Bible study as well as a home study fellowship with others. Goal: daily prayer and meditation.
Eat- If it is true that you are what you eat then I must be greasy, cheesy and sugary. None of these sounds appealing. I will be partnering with the WW in making healthier choices for meal and snack times. Water, tea and juice will replace the soda. Beer will be permitted sparingly. I love fruit and vegetables and may experiment with the ones I used to detest (broccoli). Goal: Deliberate, healthy choices in limited portions. Reward self with MAYBE one eat out, soda per week.Â
Fit- I’ve been wanting to drop 20 pounds for the past two years. I would say I have been trying but that would be misleading. Specific methods are vague at this point but will include weights, running (C25K) and a lot of hiking. I’ll be on foot every other day and pushing weights the next with a day off on Sunday. Music and podcasts will be pumping in my ears thanks to my Walkman and iPod. Goal: workout almost daily w/ emphasis on cardio, weights and drop 20 pounds by the 2nd check-in (4/4/11)
Marriage- On a more personal note, I have mentioned WonderWife many times here and it is only fair that I don’t take her or that title for granted. Truth be told, I am a selfish person and really do not appreciate her like she deserves. She is a brilliant woman who deserves someone far better than me. So now it is up to myself to be that man. Goal: More supportive to her needs by asking. Supporting her without asking and just doing what is needed. Communication and attention. Weekly family meetings.
There are so many issues I need and want to work with but they may resolve themselves with the above actions. Besides, I need to be careful not to overwhelm myself and just quit. Did you make New year resolutions? Are you still resolute in your actions?
