Out Of This World

Daphne & I had the opportunity to view a prescreening of IMAX’s new film, Hubble last night. Not only was it on the biggest screen (the only way to see a space film) but it was also shown in 3D. Upon arrival at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, we had the pleasure of meeting the Director of Online Media, Erin. She greeted Daphne with our tickets, a mission patch and a lapel pin. We then secured our cool 3D shades and then filed into the massive theater.

I watched her sit calmly in her chair with the glasses on, her space monkey doll from NASA in hand and smiles towards me. I couldn’t see her eyes but I think they went really big after seeing the beautiful stars, galaxies and universe. During the gratuitous space shuttle take-off scene where you can feel/see/hear the event, Daphne was saying WOW! as loud as she could and YAY! This didn’t phase anyone because of the excellent sound system.

I did have trouble with her talking every now and then. “space ship!”, “stars!”, “moooon!” much to the discomfort of another viewer two seats away. Hopefully he understands the amazement of a two year old and could appreciate it. Maybe not.

This summer we’ll be taking her to NASA’s Johnson Space Center across town. Next stop, the moon?
