BCS Mess Part 2008

Disclaimer: There is an OU alumni and fan in this household and we both support the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Mess

The Bowl Championship Series, or BCS, has failed again in putting the top two football teams into the national championship. It has been decided that the Ohio State Buckeyes and the LSU Tigers play for the title in New Orleans. I support LSU going because of their schedule and in winning the toughest conference championship, the SEC. OSU won the Big 10 even though there is no conference championship game. OSU’s record is 11-1 while LSU is sporting an 11-2 record. OSU has not played football in two weeks and moved up the polls by sitting on their butts.Head coach Tressel said as much on the ESPN bowl selection show.

OSU’s schedule strength does not favor them either. The Big 10 conference continues it’s decline and the non-conference opponents are a joke. So OSU is playing in the national championship with their one loss to Illinois (playing in the Rose Bowl)?

OSU was dominated in last year’s title game versus another SEC team, the Florida Gators. Does anyone really want to see OSU try again and get slaughtered by LSU? Now that the teams are named, yeah, I do. Geaux Tigers!

Why Oklahoma Deserves To Go

Like I said earlier, LSU deserves everything they get because they have EARNED it the hard way. Oklahoma needs another crack at LSU because the Sooners have another compelling case to play. Like LSU, they have an 11-2 record and are the Big 12 conference champions. They defeated the then #1 Missouri Tigers. Twice. Having said all of that. I think LSU could defeat the Sooners like they did in their last meetup which was 4 years ago in the National Championship in New Orleans. OU versus LSU is a far better game than an OSU versus LSU matchup. Everyone predicted the two teams would play again. So why aren’t they playing against each other?

Instead, the #3 Sooners face #9 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. Sports fans remember a brilliant game in which the Sooners lost to Boise State. Hopefully for the Sooner fans in this house that it will be the other way around this time.

Now when I say “BCS Mess” here is why:”Since the formation of the Bowl Championship Series, there have been several controversies regarding the formula used for selecting the participating teams. Most notably, following the 2003 season, the BCS ranking system excluded Associated Press No. 1 University of Southern California from the BCS Championship Game (The Nokia Sugar Bowl). The following season, in 2004, undefeated University of Utah and Auburn teams were left out of the BCS Championship Game (The FedEX Orange Bowl). See Bowl Championship (main article) for a further discussion of these controversies.” – Wikipedia
