Last night I received quite the surprise when I received invitations to try the new Seesmic Desktop client for Twitter and Trillian Astra, an all-in-one instant messenger client.
Trillian Astra
I had first signed up for Astra two years ago. They are currently on Build #99. I don’t think I have ever seen such a long & quiet development in consumer applications before this and it still hasn’t been released. OK, now the feature set: Astra allows you to combine instant messengers such as GTalk, Yahoo, Twitter, Skype, Jabber, Facebook, MySpace, Bonjour, MSN, ICQ, AOL, IRC and yes, even more. It will even allow email connections using IMAP and POP3!

Seesmic Desktop
This is a new product coming soon that offers multiple Twitter accounts, userlists (groups), search features and multiple columns. I’m a heavy Twhirl (also by Seesmic) user to keep track of my Twitter friends as well as Seesmic video, FriendFeed and more. I’m hopeful that at some point, Seesmic will integrate these apps into Desktop. Consider this a TweetDeck killer because it uses less real estate on your screen and less memory usage as well.
Testing
Since I have waited a long time and there is a full integration, I will be testing Astra out for a week and offer feedback then. n the mean time, get those comments in for a chance to win this!
