Victory!

Todayś football (soccer) match between the United States and Algeria was one of the most frustrating and rewarding I have ever seen. The U.S. needed this win to advance to the next round of the World Cup. Last week there were 32 teams and now there are 16. We earned this. After a 1-1 tie with England, a 2-2 tie with Slovenia that should have been a 3-2 win, the US tried to take care of business. I say ¨tried¨ because they worked hard for it. They got the goal one minute into stoppage time after a frustrating 90 minutes of regular time. I haven´t seen an American squad that was relentless in it´s attack, so well disciplined and overcome bad officiating like this one. It paid off because we are advancing to the next round for the first time in 80 years.

The English announcer for ESPN today said after the goal that Hollywood couldn´t have scripted this win scenario any better. Obviously he hasn´t seen the 1981 movie, Victory starring Micheal Caine, Pele and Sylvester Stallone. This was set during World War 2 in which the POW allies battle the Germans in a ¨friendly¨ match. Stallone as an American goalkeeper in WW2? Well why not…
