2015 Groundhog Resolution Day!

image

This is my fifth year in creating resolutions for myself and then checking in on the following months. I want to create new habits as well.

Why Groundhog’s Day and not New Year’s Day?

Because we are still recovering from the stress of the busy holiday season in December. We are not in a right frame of mind to make conscience, applicable goals and hope to stick with them.

So, I take the month of January off to reflect on the past year and the upcoming year. By now, most New Year resolution makers have failed. My concern is that with so many changes all at once I am setting myself up for failure. I won’t last a month if that were the case. It will feel like a sacrifice and people can only sacrifice for so long.

I won’t and can’t go cold turkey. Need to ease myself into a transition. My problem(s)? I suffer from procrastination. I also lack a bit of discipline in favor of something, anything that sounds more appealing.

So how can I stick to my goals? With monthly check-ins. I am starting my resolutions on 2/2. I will check in on my progress on 3/3. Next check-in will be 4/4, etc.

One goal was to drop 20 pounds. So far I’ve dropped 12 pounds. Fail.

2015 GHD Resolutions:

  1. First off, transition from “goals” into habits! Do something well enough and long enough and it becomes a habit.
  2. Eat Clean And Train Dirty
  3. Digital Asset Management (DAM).

  4. Software skills
  5. Social skills
  6. Go Denbow

Habits: People who make resolutions are saying they want to do more than what they have been. I want to do more and I also want less. I need to start some things. I also want to stop some things.

Fitness & Nutrition: As active as I am and want to be, I have got to get control of my nutrition. Simple, healthy and filling recipes. Currently 190. I can lose the fat and be happy with a toned and fit 170.Train and participate in running/adventure events. I’m looking at Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash again. **UPDATE** Just registered!!  Also some local hashing and trail running with friends.

DAM: After years of collecting images on different cameras and hard drives, there is a crucial need to build a photo server to host all of my photos and have them cataloged. This is a massive undertaking with just my photos alone. So build a server, catalog the images and scan the prints. I started it last year and was too overwhelmed. I need a course of action.

GoDenbow: I crave travel & adventures. I really want to go explore the Texas coasts. Also go back to Austin and San Antonio. Did that this past year but I felt rushed. I’m overdue for a New Orleans trip too.

Social: Speaking of friends, I need to grow and cultivate more of them. Just re-activated my Meetup membership. There are groups for every interest and locales. I enjoyed quite a few events last year.

Software: First up is to build that photo server. Use an existing Windows desktop and turn it into a bionic Linux server. Want to brush up on my command line skills. HTML, Ruby on Rails. Read more books than I already do now and then try to apply what I’ve learned.

There is more of course that I will integrate throughout the year. But for now, these specific goals, habits are enough. They are realistic goals and resolutions but my discipline sucks. That is why I will be checking in every month and holding myself accountable.

See you on 3/3!
