Reviewed: Dropbox

I’ve had a few friends ask each other what applications and software they have installed. I decided to share what I use in a series of articles. This being the first one in the series, I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Drop Box is an online file hosting service which allows users to upload files to their folders and share the contents with several other authorized or registered computers. Users are given 2GB space for free and can get that increased by a further 3GB by referring friends to the Drop Box Service. (Disclaimer: I started out with a generous 3 GB)

Those who need to upload and share large sized files regularly can get their storage space upgraded to 10GB, 50GB and even 100GB by subscribing and paying either a monthly or a yearly fee. Those who do have paid storage accounts can further have that increased by 8GB by referring friends.

Drop Box is primarily a synchronizer and aids sharing though users can also make use of the space for storing information. This service is available to multiple OS users (those using Linux, Windows and even Mac machines). You can even download an iPhone app which works beautifully!

When a user drops a folder into his/her drop box, it automatically syncs with the web as well as the other authorized computers. These files can either be shared with the other authorized users or accessed by them directly on the web.

Any changes made to the folder and the content in it can be viewed by all those who have access to it. A detailed record of the history is maintained for changes made, such as the renaming or editing of files so no matter how many people make changes, all are clearly and distinctly separated and nothing’s lost in the process. The biggest advantage of this service is that files or information that have been deleted by mistake can be recovered or got from any one of the other authorized computers.

Files can be added to the drop box either through the Drop box client or through an online interface. Adding through the Drop Box client makes it possible for users to upload files of any size as there are no limits. Uploading files via the online interface however, results in a limit of 350 MB.

I have used Dropbox from the beginning and would suggest this to everyone as sync, share & backup solution.

If you want it, please consider clicking this link as a referral. https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTE1NzM5 You & I will get an additional 250MB of storage added!
