IPSA Meeting- August

2007-08-01 13:19:06

Todd Miranda, Softech Development Thursday, August 2, 2007 11:30am – 1pm (Networking 11:30-noon; Program noon – 1pm) McWane Science Center, Special Events Room Free To Attend RSVP Now XAML is a declarative XML-based language that defines objects and their properties in XML. One of the focuses of the XAML syntax is defining the user interface for both the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight. It is therefore separate from the application code behind it and facilitates separation of design and development. XAML also allows for better cooperation between the developer and the designer in a way that has not been available with previous technologies. XAML is not just used for display technologies such as WPF and Silverlight. It is also used by other .Net technologies such as Windows Workflow (WF). This session will give you an introduction to XAML, the tools used to work with XAML, and how it relates to the technologies that rely on it. Lunch will be provided by McWane Center for an additional cost. You may order a lunch from McWane for $10 or bring your own. The cut-off for ordering a lunch is Tuesday, July 31 at noon. Parking is free in the McWane Center parking deck. Enter via the Special Events Center entrance, which is located in the northeast corner of Level C. Reserve your spot now!

The Terminal Hosts Two Events In One Night

2007-08-08 23:18:21

The Terminal, a new city blog is throwing a launch party at the Bottletree on August 29th. The station manager, Andre is also the host to once again, the Happy Hour For A Cause in which Terminal readers votes on the charity in lieu of birthday gifts for himself. Yes, it is Andre's birthday the same night but he is such a darned humble guy, he insists we give to the cause instead! Bring your old & busted mobile phones to donate for another good cause as well. Yeah, buddy it looks like it is going to be a great time. A great news source, a great venue, drinks, sexy members of the opposite sex, birthdays, charities and a great guy. And if you do not have the Terminal in your daily reading plan, why not?

Happy 34th Birthday, Wonderwife!

Busted

2007-08-25 22:32:57

No, not me this time. I am innocent. Twice within a few hours we've had flying glass shards attack in the kitchen. The first incident involved a toaster oven. Since it has been so unreasonably hot, we don't turn on the big oven, we delegate this to our small toaster oven. For reasons unknown to us, the glass shattered and continued to go off like popcorn. It is less than 6 months old, and nothing was touching the glass. Freaky. The second glass incident involvedWonderwife moving some things around to organize the kitchen and knocked over a huge glass vase. Glass/shards/glass dust went everywhere. Glass in the kitchen, into the living room and even down the stairs to the basement. Wonderwife enjoys her beverages in a plastic tumbler from now until the baby is born, thank you very much! Its The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year…

2007-08-27 23:10:29

My condolences to all of the football widows in losing your spouses to the idiot box to watch 22 guys go head to head on the gridiron. College football starts this weekend and the NFL will follow soon. I just completed my NFL fantasy football team and FINALLY have the killer team I've always wanted. All of the other chumps in my league might as well give me the trophy now and fight for second place.

On the college front, my beloved Sooners from the University of Oklahoma is recovering from a great but screwy 2006. Before the season began, two key players were kicked off the team due to NCAA violations. Coach Stoops did the right thing and OU still managed a great season. The Sooners got ducked over royally by Pac-10 officials against Oregon to suffer the first "loss". Everyone who hates OU but loves college football agrees that the game should have been given to OU as a result. The next loss came at the hands of Texas, at the Red River Rivalry. From there, Oklahoma managed to win out and play for the Big 12 championship (Texas lost too many times after that and OU took over). OU beat Nebraska soundly 21-7 to go on and play in the BCS Fiesta Bowl and wow what a game that was. This game was back & forth with Boise State going for the mother of all upsets against a perennial power and winning it 43-42. OU finishes out the year at 11-3*.

OU should have yet another good year despite losing great players like Heisman candidate Adrian Peterson. There are a few challenges this year that concern me. OU hosts Miami, Texas is always a threat and Oklahoma State is putting up some pig numbers offensively.

Major League Soccer is in full force.

Formula 1 racing is burning up the tracks with great competition between Ferrari and McLaren teams.

The rugby World Cup is being played in France 10 days from now and the USA Eagles never looked better. They don't have a snowball's chance in Hades to defeat New Zealand or Austrailia but they should do very well. Finally. First match is against England. Ouch.

With the baby being born and family coming into town, my DVR is set to overdrive and will fill up quickly.

How was your Fantasy drafts? College picks, anyone? How many other people watch F1 racing, pro soccer and rugby besides me?

Magic City Flickr Group Hosts Birmingham Photowalk

2007-08-08 23:35:32

Join me and some really great photographers this Friday night (8/10) as we walk/talk/shoot around the streets of downtown Birmingham. We'll meet up at the Metro Bistro and finish up there as well to um, quench our collective thirsts. The event is free and all photogs/friends are welcome to join in. Let us know you if you are joining us or just interested in by clicking here!  Hosted by: 102915987_2a48c570cd_m.jpg Thanks to Rocky Barbanica for the photowalking logo

Hot As…

2007-08-09 09:10:22

Temperatures are expected to once again breach the century mark today, tomorrow and beyond. This, coupled with the fact that there has been precious little rain this year is certainly not helping matters down here in Birmingham. I have 3 bottles of water at my desk and they will be gone by quittin' time. It goes without saying but I will anyway: keep cool! Wonderwife is really enjoying this during her 34th week into pregnancy! comic courtesy of Scott Stantis and the Birmingham News stantis-hotasbirmingham.jpg

Back & Forth and Deja Vu All Over Again

2007-08-15 22:00:19

Office Space, originally uploaded by Photo-Mojo.

A few people may remember that I lost my job at the beginning of the year and found a better job shortly after that. Well, last week I found out that me and more than a few others were put on the cut list with the last day being August 15 (today).
But before that happened, I was able to have an internal transfer into another division. So tomorrow I am starting fresh and moving back across the street to the main building overlooking Inverness Lake.
So I am starting on my 3rd position this year in 2 different buildings. Craziness. At least I didn't get laid off a month before the baby arrives. I have given thanks many times for this.

What do you have to be thankful for today?
